Welcome to Adventureland!
Everyone loves Adventureland! The Parks and Exhibitions were built for you to explore (探索), enjoy, and admire their wonders. Every visit will be an unforgettable experience. You will go away enriched, longing to come back. What are you going to do this time?
The Travel Pavilion
Explore places you have never been to before, and experience different ways of life. Visit the Amazon jungle (丛林) village, the Turkish market, the Tai floating market, the Berber mountain house and others. Talk to the people there who will tell you about their lives, and things they make. You can try making a carpet, making nets, fishing ...
The Future Tower
This exhibition shows how progress will touch our lives. It allows us to look into the future and explore the cities of the next century and the way we'll be living then. Spend some time in our space station and climb into our simulator (模拟装置) for the Journey to Mars.
The Nature Park
This is not really one park but several. In the Safari Park you can drive among African animals in one of our Range Cruisers: see lions, giraffes, elephants in the wild. Move on to the Ocean Park to watch the dolphins and whales. And then there is still the Aviary to see ...
The Pyramid
This is the center of Adventureland. Run out of film, need some postcards and stamps? For all these things and many more, visit our underground shopping center. Come here for information and ideas too.
When I first met professor Dalecki, I respected him greatly. He walked in the class in formal business suits as if he was prepared for a conference. He greeted everyone with a loud and clear "Good morning" like Jon Stewart from Daily Show. Then he started introducing himself and told everyone his name is Jacek, atypical Polish name that no one knows how to pronounce. He shared his frustration with the class and said, "People have already invented more than ten odd ways of calling my name in the past decade, and most Americans prefer to call me Jay-cek, but it is really ya-cek." From that moment, I knew there was something about him that made him stand out among all the professors I'd known before.
Professor Dalecki never believed in exams. He understood the huge workload that students have and never intended to make the exam questions hard for us to memorize. I once told him that I almost felt like the hell gate opened for me if I got a C. But he laughed and said, "If it were not for my loving girl friend giving me the exam questions, I can tell you I'd still be in high school somewhere in Warsaw."
What impressed me most was the extent he would go to avoid bias (偏见) in the classroom. He could turn an entire class into a battleground where everybody gets excited for a heated debate while staying objective as a mediator (调解人) who refused to force his own opinions on any side.
I visited him during his office hours once after class, eager to find out what his stances are on some of the issues we've covered in the class, so I asked, "In China, people really aren't that serious with when it is okay for teenagers to drink. What do you think of the minimum drinking age in America being set at 21?"
"I'm not supposed to answer that question," he said.
"But why? You don't seem to take any side during the class and I'm just curious to hear how you really feel!"
"I choose not to share it because I don't want it to cloud your own judgments about how you think about certain things."
At that moment, I finally understood how much effort it really took for Dalecki to let us do our thinking on our own. His incredible mindset (观念模式) still has a huge influence on me till this day. So I will end this article with his quote: "It is at this stage in the class that I must ask myself, 'Did I lie to you?'"
If you've logged on to any social media app this week, you've probably seen pictures of your friends, but they are re-imagined as fairy princesses, handsome princes, and charming characters. It is all because of Lensa, an app which uses artificial intelligence to present digital portraits based on photos users submit.
Lensa recommends users submit 10-20 selfies for the best results. The pictures should be close-up of your face with a variety of different backgrounds, facial expressions, and angles. A yearlong subscription to the app, which also provides photo editing services, costs $35.99. But you can use the app for a weeklong free trial if you want to test it out before committing.
To test out the app, I took 20 selfies I thought showed a variety of expressions and angles and submitted. It took around 20 minutes for Lensa to return my portraits, which fell into several categories: fantasy, fairy princess, focus, pop, stylish, light, kawaii, and cosmic. In general, I felt like the app did a decent job producing artistic images based on my selfies.
Other users have documented unfavorable experiences which come from their Lensa images. Aubrey Gordon, a writer and fat rights activist, wrote on her Instagram the app produced images which made her look much thinner than she actually is. "Lensa is really working overtime to make AI me into a thin person," she wrote in the caption.
Several of the artists expressed concern the apps could also threaten their livelihoods. Digital artists cannot compete with the low prices and fast turnaround artificial intelligence enables for a digital portrait, they said at the time.
Lensa's owner Prisma has tried to relieve anxiety that digital artists will be robbed of work opportunities owing to the technology. "While both humans and AI learn about artistic styles in semi-similar ways, there are some fundamental differences: AI is capable of rapidly analyzing and learning from large sets of data, but it does not have the same level of attention and appreciation for art as a human being."
We humans have an outsize influence on this planet, and our winged, finned, and four-legged neighbors are in their tough time. Many animals have died out in response to the pressures, but some survivors are adapting. Some animals are showing off never-before-seen behaviors, shifting their diets, and even evolving different shapes, sizes, and colors.
The shifts can't be avoided and are likely permanent: There's no going back to when wildlife was still completely wild. "There's no place anywhere on the planet in its original condition. There are micro plastics at the bottom of the ocean, and Antarctica is melting. The world has changed because we're in it," says Tag Engstrom, a biologist at California State University.
African elephants in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park are some daring members of the animal kingdom, who have found a will and a way to change right along with it.
Normally elephants use their 6-foot-long tusks to dig wells in search of water, lift objects, rip bark off trees, and even battle lions. In other words, the ivory appendages (附属品) are not just impressive to look at — they are highly useful tools. So it might seem strange that a significant number of African elephants in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, once an illegal hunting wildlife area, are now being born without tusks.
According to a 2021 DNA analysis published in the journal Science, that the elephants are born without tusks is no coincidence. After decades of being shot by ivory brokers, the leading elephants in some herds have passed down a trait that prevents the females' prize possessions from growing in — and helps them avoid being hunted. No one knows yet how widespread these genes might be in the greater population of African elephants, or how the loss of tusks might affect the mammals' survival overall. But the findings are a powerful, if depressing, reminder of the extremes a species might endure to escape from extinction.
In any survey of self-made millionaires, you're likely to notice the key to their success is that they never stop learning. So how does one build a lifelong learning mindset?
Seek out information that may be contrary to what you believe. Expand your horizons. Challenge yourself to find a better way. You will find a way around barriers!
Turn mistakes into opportunities. The practice of learning from mistakes is one of the best lifelong learning skills anyone can master. They show us better way to think and work. They also provide insights into hidden knowledge and awareness.
Adopt a growth mindset. A mindset that is in line with how our brains really works really helps. Individuals with a fixed mindset believe their intelligence and talents are fixed. People with a growth mindset believe they can improve themselves through practice.
Establish goals. What do you want to learn? When do you want to learn it? Every year set goals for yourself on skills and knowledge you want to acquire. Besides, I always have the daily goal of learning something new whether through reading or by talking to other people.
Avoid stress. As stress increases, the body releases chemicals to cause a fear response. This creates an environment in which a person simply can't focus or work, let alone learn. Keep life relaxed and learning will follow.
There are many other tips for successfully creating a learning plan, but those don't have a fighting chance if your mindset is passive.
A. Try new things. B. Challenge conventional thinking. C. This means having the end clearly in mind. D. There is much to learn from making mistakes. E. I usually set three big learning goals each year. F. They don't think they can improve with efforts. G. This way, success will happen much more naturally. |
I became a gardener when I was twelve. My early1of gardening may not have originated from my love for nature. It was to2my parents.
At that time, we had a big yard in which a beautiful maple tree stood. But my mother often looked with3at this work of natural art. Those golden leaves seemed like tons of rubbish to her, "something else to4!"Seeing the neighbors busy with gardening, my father ever thought it a waste of time.
At that age, I always did something5to whatever my parents did! If gardening were something they found6, I would plant a garden!
I planted some lily (百合花)seeds in the yard. But they failed to7. I continued to sunflower seeds and roses. Wild 8joy, I found the first rose bloom (开花). One by one, the flowers bloomed their heads off.9, I was touched by this land of wonder.
10, my parents showed no interest in my garden. My father even11at me because he found it was12to move around my garden to the driveway. To my mother's13, I put her vase my real roses which, in her eyes, were simply weeds14flowers.
Regardless of their15, I kept on planting my garden and16to enjoy the pleasure gardening. Plants make such good companions: they breathe, they bloom, they17to care and love.
It has been many years since I made my first garden out of my desire to18my parent. Today I become known as Mrs. Greenthumbs, teaching gardening and hosting a gardening show which makes my parents feel very19. And now I could say it is my affection for20that makes me a real gardener.
A small town in England is teaching the world that it is important (grow) your own food. Any open space (use) to grow fruit and vegetables. There are apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, cabbages and carrots, here and there. Everyone can pick them free. Eight years ago, a woman named Pam in Todmorden dug up her rose garden. She planted vegetables, knocked down the garden wall and put up a sign (say),"Help yourself!" Today, Pam has (complete) changed the town. A new town has been born, is called "Incredible Edible Todmorden". Pam explained why she thought the idea was popular. "It's possible and positive. Many people know we have to change, how we do that is a question." So one day, she gathered all the (village) together. They decided to do something different at once. They didn't write reports. They didn't ask for (permit). They just did it. Only a short time later, Todmorden became a big garden full of fruit and vegetables. In Todmorden, there is a motto: If you eat, you are in. But that's not all. There (be) more than 700 edible towns popping up around the world, from Canada to Mali. People there think about food and protect the environment at the same time.

Last week I compete in the long jump in our school sports meeting. I went all out for a win, and victory did not favor me. Accepting failure was last thing I wanted. It seemed that all your previous efforts had been meaningless. My classmates came to comfort me. "Never give up!" and "You are amazed!" These words were like the warm spring breeze, blew away the dark clouds in my heart. I came to realize the significant of failure. Failure is essentially for us if we want to become stronger, because it not only exercises our minds but makes us to better understand ourselves. This is which I've learned in the long jump.
