There are many useful suggestions and pieces of advice that can help one to improve English. Here are some useful suggestions and new tips to increase one's English language vocabulary.

Learning English vocabulary is about much more than just learning the right words. A broad grasp of vocabulary in the English language is based on understanding important expressions.

Learning a word will not help very much if you quickly forget it. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary. Since most words are learned from how they are used in context, the more words one is shown, the better vocabulary one will have. Keep a piece of paper close to you. When you read, pay more attention to the word you do not know, write the word down and try to figure out its meaning from the context. Then look up the word in a dictionary.

Remember that if you do not use English words that you have just learned in conversation or writing, you will forget them very quickly. So the best way to learn new words effectively is just by trying to use them in conversation and writing. Remember also that practice is the key to fluent spoken English.

Building vocabulary is a life-long task. Remember, "In the beginning was the word. " Your future could depend on how rich your vocabulary is. It will also determine the quality of your communication.

    1. (1) We can learn from the passage that learning English vocabulary
A . is just about learning the right words B . is about remembering more and more words C . doesn't require one to learn expressions D . requires one to understand important expressions
    2. (2) Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A . It doesn't take long to build one's vocabulary B . If you remember a word, you are still able to forget it if you don't use it. C . To master a word, you need to repeat it 10-20 times. D . Practice is very important in fluent spoken English.
    3. (3) The best way to learn new words is
A . reading them loudly over and over again B . writing them down over and over again C . trying to use them while speaking and writing D . always looking them up in the dictionary

The Moon is attracting much attention these days as NASA is ready for its Artemis I launch and preparing for more to follow. The mission objectives are clear: develop a sustainable presence on its surface and pave the way to go to Mars.

And then what? What's the next great leap in humans' quest for the secrets of the universe?

When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.

First off, there's Venus, a planet which was a relative paradise with oceans and a pleasant atmosphere. Something went terribly wrong there a few billion years ago, and NASA has scheduled a series of missions to explore what exactly is going on there.

At the other end are the gas giants. Several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are covered in thick sheets of ice, and underneath that ice sit oceans of liquid water. NASA has missions planned to investigate those mysterious worlds, hunting for any signs of possible life hidden deep within.

As for us humans, Mars is certainly the grand prize in the coming decades. If we have the adequate drive and funds, we can establish a semi-permanent presence on the red planet, keeping crews working and studying in person on the Martian surface. The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on. Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.

Over the coming decades, humans expect to see a rise of "space hotels", set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations. Naturally, turning the space rock into a habitat for humans is not very practical considering our current level of technological maturity, but in my best estimation, it's the next easiest thing to accomplish after the Moon and Mars, of course.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word "quest" probably mean in the second paragraph?
      A . Request. B . Explanation. C . Question. D . Search.
    2. (2) Which is the least likely to be explored in the next decades according to the passage?
      A . Mars. B . Venus. C . Mercury. D . Gas giants.
    3. (3) What's the author's attitude towards the "space hotels"?
      A . Doubtful. B . Hopeful. C . Critical. D . Unconcerned.

Children should do housework. That's a controversial(有争议的) idea, though not everyone will admit it. A few parents will say that their children are too busy for housework. Many more of us assign(分派) housework, or say we believe in them, but the housework just doesn't get done.

That's a problem. For starters, housework is good for kids. Being a part of the routine work of running a household helps children develop an awareness of the needs of others, while at the same time contributing to their emotional well-being.

One small study, done over a period of 25 years, found that the best predictor(预测) for young adults' success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks at age 3 or 4. Those early shared responsibilities extended to a sense of responsibility in other areas of their lives.

But for all that their help matters, few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1,000 American adults, 75 percent said they believed regular housework made kids "more responsible". Yet while 82 percent reported having had regular housework growing up, only 56 percent of those with children said they required them to do housework.

Sports and homework are not get-out-of-housework-free cards. The goal, after all, is to raise adults who can balance a caring role in their families and communities with whatever lifetime achievement goals they choose. Housework teaches that balance.

What should you do when getting children to do housework? Accept no excuses. Don't worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you're spending more time getting the child to do this job than it would take to do it yourself, then you're doing it right. Can a payment help? Maybe. But if you're trying to teach kids to share the responsibility of a home, paying them for routine housework is not the right message.

    1. (1) What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A . Very few children get housework done. B . Children are very busy with housework. C . Housework is a must-do for parents. D . Family members should respect each other.
    2. (2) What is found in the small study?
A . Housework helps a man live a happy life. B . A man's success depends on his housework. C . Housework benefits a sense of responsibility. D . A child must start doing housework at Age 3.
    3. (3) What does the author advise parents to do in the last paragraph?
A . Balance housework and study. B . Help the child do housework positively. C . Do housework by themselves. D . Pay the child for housework.
    4. (4) What is the best title of the text?
A . Adults Do Less Housework in the US B . Housework Matters to Children C . Parents Words Speak Louder D . Children Need More Care at Home

One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams. "Steve!" Startled(吓了一跳), he turned to look at her. "Pay attention!" She began to go over the test results. "You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but. . . " She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare. "The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"

After that, Steve still couldn't do his homework. "Just try it," Miss White said one day. "Steve! Please! I care about you!" Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him?
