Adam's class had to work in pairs for a project—find a special way to show the similarities(相似点) and differences between plants and animals and present it four days later.
Adam was1 when Mrs. Tyler placed him with Toby. They had never spent much time together and had nothing in common. Adam was crazy about electricity, 2 Toby wanted to be an artist.
After Mrs. Tyler finished assigning partners, every3 sat together and started discussion, except Adam and Toby. They remained4 , not knowing where to start. At last Adam said, "Let's5 something that uses electricity."
"What does electricity have to do with plants and animals? We need pictures or models." Toby didn't6 . By the end of the morning, they hadn't had the same opinion.
On the bus ride home, Adam sat front alone,7 the morning's discussion. He had lots of ideas in his mind, but he knew that he and Toby had to work8 a team. Toby sat back and felt the same way. Finally, Adam walked to Toby and said, "We need to find an idea that could combine(结合)our two9 ." Toby nodded and then invited Adam to his house.
When Adam walked into Toby's bedroom, he was surprised to see the room full of sculptures (雕塑)and paintings. Then suddenly Adam cried out, "I know10 to do our project! Why not make a plant and cat sculpture with some lights?" Toby said it was perfect. So11 of them couldn't wait to get started.
When it was time to present, they placed their special sculptures on the table. Toby talked about plants and cats12 . As he described the similarities, Adam made red lights shine in the right places in the sculpture. When Toby pointed out the differences, yellow lights shone. The presentation turned out to be a13 . Mrs. Tyler clapped and the class cheered.
"We've14 something," said Adam and Toby later. "It's not just plants and animals that have similarities as well as differences. We do, too! And the differences sometimes can make things15 ."

Becky and Steve walked to school on a winter morning. Becky wore a hat and gloves but no scarf. Steve wore a hat and two scarves, but he didn't have any gloves. They both felt very cold.
Then Becky had an idea! "What if I trade you one glove for one of your scarves?", Becky said. "Then both of our necks would be warm, and we'd each have one warm hand. We could put the other hand in our pockets."
"Good idea!" said Steve.
After they shared the scarf and glove, they began to feel warmer.
A few minutes later Mrs. Brown appeared. "Did I just see you barter?" she asked.
Becky and Steve looked puzzled(迷惑的). "What's barter?" Becky asked.
"Barter means trade things without using money", Mrs. Brown explained. "You two traded a scarf and a glove so you could be warm. Did you know that traders bartered for thousands of years?"
"Really? How did it work?" Steve asked.
Mrs. Brown said, "Well, traders who had too much of one thing, such as salt or cloth or pigs, would exchange them with other traders for other things that they needed. Trading grew and developed, but it had problems."
"Like what?" Becky asked.
"Suppose you raised chickens. You could trade the chickens and eggs for what you needed. But if the chickens got away..."
"I wouldn't have anything to trade!"
"Exactly!" said Mrs. Brown.
"Now you see why people began to use money to trade." Mrs. Brown added.
"Is it true that silver and gold coins were used before paper money?" Steve asked.
"Yes, but they were too heavy to carry." Mrs. Brown said. "People then began to write promises on paper instead of trading coins. That was how paper money got its start."
"Wow!" said Becky, "but I guess people still trade sometimes, the way Steve and I did today!"
① exchange objects ② use coins ③ use paper money
①Are you emotional? Do you often have strong feelings? How do you deal with bad emotions?
②We feel angry or guilty about the things we did or did not achieve, about the things we cannot have, and many other things. It seems that everyone carries their own bad emotions. But neither guilt nor anger can help us. Over time, ____.
③These bad emotions don't do anything good for us at all. So you might ask yourself—is it possible to put down this heavy burden and give yourself a break? It is quite possible. Start by actually looking at your feelings. How do they get inside of us? Why do we carry them for so long instead of putting them down? Can we live without them?
④By thinking about our bad emotions, we can find healthy ways to deal with them. Unhealthy behaviors are not the way to do this. They provide no relief. Instead, there are better ways to handle them. One of the best ways is forgiveness.
⑤Forgiveness is a powerful tool. We should forgive ourselves first. We shouldn't keep bad emotions inside. We must also forgive others who have made us guilty or angry. This is not always easy. But when we learn to forgive ourselves, it becomes easier to forgive others as well.
⑥There is nothing good about carrying years of emotional burdens. By forgiving ourselves and others, we can abandon our burdens and feel better about ourselves. The moment you do this, you will start to feel a lot lighter. Years of heaviness will be magically lifted! You'll start to feel like you have more energy and you'll be much happier with your lite.
Robin Hood is one of the most popular and interesting characters in English folk (民间的) stories, and his story is quite well known across the world. In fact, stories about the adventures of Robin Hood have been around for over six hundred years. There have been several films made about him, including three in Hollywood. But who was he, and was he actually real?
In the thirteenth century, King Richard and his army were fighting in foreign lands. Richard's brother John ruled England while he was away. John was a cruel (残忍的) ruler, and so was his friend — the terrible police officer of Nottingham. The police officer asked for money from all the people who lived in the area of Nottingham. The poor had to pay a lot and struggled (挣扎) to live.
In the story, Robin Hood was angry at the unfairness and decided to fight against it. He and his fellows lived in Sherwood Forest, a large wood near Nottingham. They caught the king's deer for food. They also robbed (抢) rich people who were travelling through the forest and gave the money to poor people. The forest was considered a dangerous place, but to Robin and his band, it was a place of safety, away from the police officer's men.
There are some findings that a man called Robin Hood actually lived during the thirteenth century. The fact is that he was not quite such a good man as the one in the folk stories. But it is the heroic character in the story that we remember.
Today, Sherwood Forest is a tourist attraction. Nearly a million people every year come to learn about Britain's most famous Robin Hood. And even if he wasn't quite such a great man, it's a great story!

Which is better, writing or typing? These days, many university students have given up(take) class notes by hand. Instead, they type on computers they think typing is fast, and they can write more notes. But a new research has showed that taking notes by hand is in fact better for long﹣term memory.
In this research, one hundred students (ask) to listen to a teacher. Some took notes by typing on a laptop. The (other) took notes by writing them down. Then they were given a test. Both groups got almost same result in remembering the facts. But students who typed their notes did (badly)on questions needed to understand.
Why is it like this? The answer is that writing by hand is slow, but it gives the students more time (think) about the questions they don't understand. So they can write down the main points. "This (lead) to a deeper understanding," says the scientist.
However, the students typing notes on a laptop usually just write down the teacher says in class. Although they can write more notes, they just type thinking about what they are typing." This usually leads to mindless transcription (抄录)", says the scientist.
So if you want to remember something better, write it by hand!
