Traffic rules help to keep order on the road. They also help to keep people 1 . The pedestrian(行人) has as many rules to 2 as the driver of a car. It was the third Saturday in December. My son, Mark, saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.I drove him to a supermarket. Mark picked up a handbasket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (交款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. One day, a poor farmer was taking a bag of rice to town. Suddenly the bag fell off his horse on the road. He didn't know what to do about it because it was too heavy for him to lift by himself. He only hoped that somebody would help him. Just at that moment a man riding a horse came up to him. But the farmer was very disappointed (失望) when he saw who he was. It was the great man living nearby. The farmer hoped to ask another farmer or a poor man like him to help him. But to his surprise, the great man got off his horse as soon as he came near. He said to the farmer, "I see you need help, friend. You are lucky to see me just at the right time." Then He took one end of the bag, the farmer took the other. They together lifted and put it on the horse."Sir," asked the farmer, "how can I pay you?" "It's quite easy," the great man answered with a smile, "wherever you see anyone else in trouble, do the same for him."
An 80-year-old couple(夫妇) were having problems remembering things, so they decided to go to their doctor's to see what was wrong with them.
When they arrived, they told the doctor about their memory problems. After checking the couple, the doctor told them that they were OK, but they needed to write things down to help them remember things. The couple thanked the doctor and left. Later that night while watching TV, the man got up from his chair and his wife asked, "Where are you going?" He answered, "To the kitchen." She asked, "Will you get me an ice cream?" He answered, "Sure." She then asked him,"Don't you think you should write it down?" He said, "No, I can remember that." She said, "Well, I'd like some strawberries on top. You had better write that down." He said, "I can remember that, you want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries." She answered, "Well, I would also like an apple. I know you will forget that so you'd better write it down." He began to shout, "I don't need to write that down! I can remember that." He then went into the kitchen angrily. After about 20 minutes he returned from the kitchen and handed her a plate of bacon(熏肉) and eggs. She looked at these things and said angrily: "I told you! To write it down! You forgot my toast(面包)!"
