I have a friend named Jim Roberts. He was the son of a poor family. He had a dream of owning a horse ranch(牧场)when he was a child.
One day when he was at high school, he wrote a six-page paper. In the paper, he wrote about his dream. The next day, he handed it into the teacher. Two days later, he got his paper back. On the paper was an F with a note that read, "See me after class." He went to see the teacher after class and asked, "Why did I get an F?" The teacher answered, "This is an unrealistic(不切实际的)dream for a boy like you. You come from a poor family and you have no money. Having a horse ranch needs a lot of money. You can't do this. Write it again."
After a week, he handed in the same paper, making no changes at all. He said to the teacher, "You can keep the F and I can keep my dream."
Since then, Jim worked very hard. Today he has a big horse ranch and lives a different life. He keeps that school paper he wrote all the time and he never gives up his dream.
Many astronauts (宇航员) go into space. How do they live in space? What do they eat? How do they sleep? How do they wash? Let's have a look at their life.
What is a space station? A space station is a little bigger than a football field. It moves around the Earth. Astronauts live and work in space station.
How do they sleep? The astronauts use sleeping bags. They can sleep anywhere in the space station. They tie their bodies so they will not float around while sleeping. Astronauts need a patch(眼罩), or it'll be too bright. The space station takes 90 minutes to move around the Earth. The astronauts will see 16 sunrises and sunsets in a day.
What do they eat? Food for astronauts is different from what we eat on Earth. People remove(去除) water from it. It will not take up so much room. Astronauts just need to add some water and warm the food before they eat
How do they wash? Water is very precious in space, because it is difficult to carry water to space. When the astronauts want to clean their hands or faces, they use a wet towel with soap in it. When the astronauts want to wash their hair, they use waterless shampoo. To clean their bodies, the astronauts use wet towels. All these don't need any water.
In most parts of the world, many students help their school protect the environment and make the life better. They join in "environment clubs". In the environment club, students work together to make the environment clean.
Here are the things students often do.
Turn off the water tap! Do you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty tons of water an hour? In a year, that would fill a small river! In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets.
No-car day. On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car--not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to our air, so remember to walk, jump, ride a bike or run on the day. Use your legs! There's lots of fun.
No-rubbish lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags. Those bags can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least rubbish. Then, they report them to the whole school!
We love our environment. Let's work together to make it clean!
Social media (社交媒体) are becoming very popular. People have completely made social media part of their daily lives. As a result, many people have developed an Internet personality.
The Internet personality is the one we shape on our social media sites. We are always posting (发布) information about ourselves for other people to know even when it can be completely untrue. Some people even spend money in buying followers or buying a very expensive camera for their friends to take photos of them. I find it unbelievable. The time and energy spent on these silly things can only make us want to be accepted by more people.
Social media are also a modern cause of depression (压抑): People see the perfect lives of others and consider their own imperfect lives as bad. Even kids deal with this.
I find that many people spend more time and energy on online personality and care less about their real personality. So many times I have seen confident and beautiful girls on social media. But in the real world, they are quite shy.
Social media have gone so far as to even affect (影响)marriages. This is because there are now "Instagram husbands". These husbands take perfect photos of their partners throughout the day. They spend a lot of time doing that whether they like it or not. Social media are likely to influence relationships in a negative (消极的)way.
I think everyone shouldn't use social media at least for a few months to experience the difference it makes to them. They may find life is very different and much better.
