Something that I learnt from both my parents was the important of having respect(尊重) for other people. I remember one day when we were traveling on a bus and1 sat down while other people were standing. My mother shouted at me"2 immediately!" You have young legs and you don t need to sit down baling time I felt embarrassed（尴尬的）about being told of (责骂)3 , but now I understand. I think children nowadays have4 that respect and it really makes me angry if I see children sitting down while 5 people are standing.
One area in which we had a lot of rules was table 6 . For example, we weren't allowed start meal7 the oldest person had started. Mr. Smith is already 88 years old. He used to sell ice—cream in New York. Last month, his daughter died and left him with two grandchildren. He had to look after them.
"What should we do? We have to make money, "Mr. Smith said to his wife. Then he decided to sell ice—cream again. He got up early every morning and worked until midnight.
Steve is a reporter. He often bought ice—cream from Mr. Smith. Soon he learned about his story. He wanted to help the old man, so he posted a photo online. Lots of people read Mr. Smith's story and came to buy ice—cream. That was not enough. Steve started to raise money for Mr. Smith. He planned to raise $3, 000, but in fact, he got more than S201, 000.
Now Mr. Smith is rich. He doesn't need to make money. But he says, "I'm really thankful to Steve and other kind people for helping me. I want to help others, too. "He keeps on selling ice—cream. He gives ice—cream to kids for free. He also gives his money to poor families.
Just as the saying goes, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Try to help, and you will feel different.
On Dec 9, three Chinese astronauts gave a science lecture（讲课）400 kilometers above Earth！Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, who are working aboard the Tiangong space station, showed millions of students a glimpse（一瞥）of their life there. They also did some fun science experiments（实验）. Let's take a look at some of them.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth's gravity（重力）. But in space, our bones and muscles（肌肉）don't need to sustain our body's weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. NASA says that astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous because they will be too walk to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It's called a "penguin suit". There are many elastic bands(弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
Wang also showed students how she walked on a treadmill(跑步机) and rode a bicycle. Astronaut exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.
Space water is different
During another experiment, Wang made a water film（膜）. Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why？
We need to first understand the surface tension（表面张力）of water. It is like a "skin" of water. The "skin" is there because water molecules（分子）are drawn to each other. Most of the time, gravity is too strong and it breaks the "skin". But with zero gravity in space, the "skin" stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Space water is different in many other ways from that on Earth. For example, water will not flow downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That's why astronauts usually drink water through straws（吸管）in sealed（密封的）bags. If astronauts cry, the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe them away！
After winner gold with three perfect scores in the women's 10—meter platform final, Quan Hongchan's interviews and moving stories of growing up have caused the public's imaginations(想象).
She admitted(承认) that speaking in front of the cameras made her even more nervous than jumping off the platform at the Olympics.
"I just want to eat a lot of delicious food , like spicy gluten strips(辣条), " said Quan after winning gold. "I'm clumsy(笨拙的), and I'm not good at study. I just know how to dive. "
"And what's my secret in diving？I don't know. Some people say my splash（水花）into the water is even smaller than the splash they make when they throw a dumpling into a pot. I don't know and I've never compared（比较）the two. "
Quan, who comes from a poor family, was barely known before the Tokyo Olympic. Now she suddenly finds herself a huge star on social media. By last Sunday afternoon, her Weibo account had got over a million one hundred thousand followers. The teenager was the subject of around 30 topics, including her diving performances, her childhood experiences and so on.
Her interviews has aroused（引起）special interest in her family's difficult situation. "My mum is sick now. I really want to make more money, so I can cure her, "Quan told a news conference.
Quan was born and raised in a village. In 2017, her mother was badly hurt in a car accident. Since then, the medicinal bills（账单）have piled up, and left Quan's father as the family's only earner. When the accident happened, Quan had been diving for just three years.
Quan's story has won the heart of the nation. Besides being surrounded（围绕）with congratulations and messages of support, she has been contacted by many organizations, companies and individuals（个人）offering to help her family.
Fans have even been mailing spicy gluten strips to Quan's family, with boxes of the snacks piling up and blocking the door to their home.
Quan's sudden fame（名气）has also brought some unwanted attention, with fans flocking（蜂拥）to her home in search of photo chances. Quan Hongchan's home has become a tourist attraction, and every day nearly a hundred people go there to take photos. Some Internet celebrities（名人）have even started doing online live broadcasting in front of Quan's home.
Experts（专家）have expressed worries that the craze could be harmful to the youngster's growth. As she's still just a teenager, society needs to protect her innocence（纯真）. We need to protect her from the side effects（副作用）of social media. After all, Quan is only 14 years old, and there's a long journey ahead of her.
The Awakening Age（《觉醒年代》）is the most meaningful and interesting TV drama that I have ever seen. It was shown first on CCTV 1 on February 1, 2021. It shows history from the New Culture Movement（新文化运动）to the founding（成立）of the Communist Party of China（CPC）.
I like it because I can feel the power of youth from the drama. In order to wake people up to the problems, many students gave speeches in the streets. They tried their best to fight for a better world. Also, they spread ideas of democracy（民主）and science no mater what troubles they would get into.
Among all the characters, I admire Chen Yanmian the most. He has made great contributions to the growth of the CPC. Although his life was short—he only lived to the age of 29—his spirit will always live in people's hearts. The show encourages me to face difficulties in a brave and positive（积极的）way.
Homestays are becoming more and more popular, and people around the world are offering their homes as hotels. Homestays offer cheap places to stay, and the chance for guests to see the area like a local. They are very popular with people who want to stay in another country to study or on holiday. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.
The Atal family
Our family home is in a small village in the east of Pakistan, in the Himalayan mountains. The village is quite small and very quiet. The mountains are extremely beautiful. You can go for a long walk and swim in the rivers but there are no shops, cinemas or cafes.

Our two—bed house is by the sea in the south—west of England. It is about five minutes' drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches, rivers and forests and it is very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading books, watching films and going for walks. Our area is great for sports like surfing, kayaking and mountain biking. However, the houses here are expensive, which can be a problem for local people. There are no buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around without a car.

Our home is near the centre of Beirut, Lebanon, one of the largest cities in the Middle East. There are lots of cafes and restaurants, which open late at night. We love it here because it's so friendly and you can always find what you need—lots of people come to stay to learn Arabic and French. However, it can be noisy at night, and there is quite a lot of traffic during the day.

Every week, our teacher gives us a new topic to discuss in class. Last Monday, however, he asked us a very interesting question—"Do you think it is dto be a parent？" Some of the students said they thought it was easy, as parents never have to do any homework！Our teacher said he wouldn't tell us the a. He said he would let us be "a parent" for a week. He was sure we would have the answer by the end of the week.
Then the teacher asked us to s the rest of the lesson in making "flour（面粉) babies". We first took some bags and filled them with flour in order to make the "babies" as h as real ones. We then tied the bags very tight(紧的), so the would not fall out. After that, we used cardboard（纸) to make some arms, legs and a face for our flour babies, and then we d them in old pieces of clothing. My baby looked as I am not good at art, but it was great fun.
When we finished, our teacher gave us all notebooks to record our e with the babies for the whole week. We had to carry them with us every day and look after them like real babies. That was really hard work！For example, one of my friends has quite a bad memory, and he l his flour baby on the bus one morning. We also had to feed the baby and get it for bed in the evening. Every night, I was supposed to get up three t to feed the flour baby. I was tired and fell a very quickly. Yet it was just a few hours before my alarm clock woke me up again. I got so little sleep t I had black bags under my eyes.
It was a hard time, but now the project is finished. I feel I have learmt that it is not easy to be a responsible（负责的）parent. I think it also gave me a new perspective（观点）on what my parents have done for me.
