Mounting a telescope on the balcony at home, Wang Zhipu, a 16-year-old boy from Fujian Province, observes the skies, takes photos and begins his voyage into space after class. Recently, his efforts were rewarded when he won the title of "Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2021"in the Royal Observatory Greenwich's annual astrophotography contest. His winning entry, entitled Family Photo of the Solar System, shows seven of the eight planets lined up horizontally, with the sun on the left and moon on the right, both pictured larger in size than normal.

"All families are unconventional, so I adored this fresh, gently playful concept around the solar system, "said the competition judge Sue Prichard while talking about Wang's picture. "A meaningful technically accomplished work from a rising star of astronomical photography. "

It hasn't been easy taking pictures of outer space. For about half a year, Wang had to calculate the best time to shoot planets when they're opposite the sun in Earth's sky to get the brightest images. What's more, he still needed to wait for clear weather to see better. For example, to capture a clear picture of Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, which is often cited as the most difficult of the five brightest planets to see with the naked eye, Wang tried to shoot it three times in the early morning but failed. At sunset, he shot 10, 000 frames of video and selected several thousand better frames to overlay, further refine them and form a more satisfactory picture.

Sometimes Wang would be so absorbed in his observations that he wouldn't go downstairs to fetch a coat, even in the middle of winter. Other times, he stood for hours under the burning sun to get the perfect shot. To get an ideal shot, he often gets up at dawn, sleeps early to wake up at midnight, and even takes time off from evening classes when necessary.

    1. (1) What kind of feeling does Sue Prichard show for Wang's prizewinning picture?
      A . Curiosity. B . Indifference. C . Appreciation. D . Anxiety.
    2. (2) What did Wang need to do in preparation for his photographing?
A . Figure out when the planets shine best. B . Find out where clear weather can be seen. C . Work out how far the planets are from the sun. D . Make out when the planets face the earth most directly.
    3. (3) What's the last paragraph mainly about?
      A . Wang's passion for outer space. B . Wang's habits of observing stars. C . Wang's addiction to shooting skills. D . Wang's choices of shooting occasions.
    4. (4) Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A . Stars Gathering, Teenager Is the Brightest B . Medals Shining, Teenagers Gains the Gold C . Eyes on the Stars, Teenager Wins Top Photo-prize D . Dreams in Heart, Teenager Succeeds in Top Contest

Take the wheel of an electric vehicle and prepare to be amazed. The latest technology is there, with tablet-like screens instead of old-fashioned switches. Add falling price which makes owning and running many electric vehicles (short for EV)as cheap as fossil-fuel alternatives, and the open road signals. Above all, the instant acceleration of battery power makes driving easy and exciting.

EV should be recharged roughly every 250 miles. When you do find a public charging point, it is sometimes inaccessible, which causes "range anxiety". It is one of the main reasons drivers give for not buying an EV. Who might install them? Drivers will need a mix of fast "long distance" chargers installed near motorways and slower" top-up" chargers available in the car parks of shopping centers, restaurants and so on. Dedicated charging firms and carmakers are investing in infrastructure(基础设施). Oil companies are putting chargers in petrol stations and buying charging companies.

Yet the charging business suffers from big problems. One is how to adjust between the planning authorities and grid(电网)firms. Another is the cost. To start with, profits may be difficult to attain because the networks will not at first be heavily used. A related risk is that the coverage will have gaps. And then there is the question of competing networks. Drivers should be able to switch from one to the other without having to sign up to them all.

What to do? Government is experimenting. As well as funding EV sales, many are throwing cash at public chargers. America's law sets aside $7. 5 billion to create 500, 000 public stations by 2030. Britain plans to require new building to install chargers. Yet the problem of coverage and convenience will remain.

    1. (1) What is the biggest highlight of an EV?
      A . Falling price. B . Replacing switches. C . Running self-drive. D . Instant acceleration of battery power.
    2. (2) What does the underlined words "range anxiety" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A . The reason for drivers' not buying an EV. B . The issue of who might install charging points. C . The doubt of whether drivers can charge free in petrol stations. D . The worry of drivers' not finding accessible public charging points.
    3. (3) What results in the problem of the cost?
A . Frequent power failure.  B . The incomplete coverage of network. C . Drivers' not being capable of signing up for network. D . A bad relationship between the authority and the grid.
    4. (4) What is the author's attitude towards the government's plan?
      A . Recognized. B . Neutral. C . Prejudiced. D . Unconcerned.

We have a family tradition where each year, on New Year's Eve, we sit down and go through old albums. This year, when we were doing this annual routine, I noticed my grandmother looked shorter now than in pictures from when she was younger.

Our height decreases with age. The height that most of us boosts during our teens and twenties suddenly decides to leave us behind as we get increasingly older. So we se our parents and grandparents "shrinking".

This loss in height is observed in both males and females and across continents. Aging is universal; so too is our gradual reduction in height. People typically begin losing their height around the age of 30 years. Every ten years after this age, humans lose almost one centimeter, which roughly translates to about one half of an inch. This decrease in height also accelerates with age. Men and women lose height differently. Women lose more inches compared to males of the same age. Also, interestingly enough, the rate of height loss depends on their initial height, with the taller ones losing more height.

The length of leg bones and the spine(脊柱)determine the height of a person. These normally attain their maximum length by the end of adolescence, after which one's height does not increase. During our "adult phase", the length of the leg bones remains pretty much the same, but the spinal bones tend to play a key role in the reduction of height. Besides, the ligaments(韧带)of the foot start degenerating with age. This arches our foot down. Thus, our height may reduce slightly. In addition, the body loses its lean mass muscle with age due to, in part, loss of muscle tissues. This condition is age-related loss of muscle. The muscle fibers shrink and are replaced at a slower rate. This muscle loss makes us look shorter.

Nothing can really push the stop button, but it can lose some speed through appropriate diet, regular exercise, and general avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine.

    1. (1) Why does the author mention his family tradition?
A . To indicate the value of family. B . To analyze a complicated issue. C . To introduce the topic of the text. D . To share his interesting experiences.
    2. (2) Who probably loses height the most?
      A . A tall 70-year-old man. B . A short 50-year-old woman. C . A tall eighty-year-old woman. D . A mid-height eighty-year-old man.
    3. (3) What changes will mainly determine the height decrease?
      A . Spinal bones. B . Muscle tissues. C . Leg bones. D . Foot ligaments.
    4. (4) What can be known about the height reduction?
A . It can be stopped. B . It can affect health. C . It can change lifestyle. D . It can be slowed down.
四、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
  • 15. 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Have you ever had the pleasure of popping(使发砰砰声)the small air-filled bubbles that make up a sheet of bubble wrap? Have you ever wondered why popping them is so much fun? It turns out that there is some science behind the human connection to bubble wrap. Some experts believe it's similar to the need to fidget(动来动去). These small actions are all types of fidgeting.

While some people think fidgeting is distracting, it's actually been shown to increase attention span. Similarly, a study revealed that people report feeling more alert after popping bubble wrap. The results also showed that people who popped bubble wrap were calmer afterward than those who did not. So, popping bubble wrap may increase people's ability to pay attention and remember what they learn.

In other words, your brain is wired to enjoy it! Early humans had to be on their toes all the time. They needed to be ready to run from wild animals at a moment's notice. Today, people spend a lot of time sitting, especially at school and at work. As a result, the body may build a lot of muscle tension from lack of movement. Popping bubble wrap helps relax that muscle tension. It reduces stress and anxiety.

In fact, studies have shown that, sometimes, the human brain receives feel-good chemicals like dopamine(多巴胺) after popping bubble wrap.

    A. So that may be why it feels so satisfying!

    B. It also helps with the memory of information.

    C. You will benefit a lot from the air-filled bubbles.

    D. If so, you know there's something highly satisfying about it.

    E. Have you ever seen someone else blowing the small bubbles?

    F. Do you click a pen or bounce your leg while you're listening?

    G. Experts also say the enjoyment may be tied to human evolution.

    No Time

With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year-old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, "No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK?"

Holding her oil painting, she frowned(皱眉), and then searched for her dad.

"Dad, see what I have done, "Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned(咧嘴笑)at her, and showed his thumbs up!

Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily, "Dad, you haven't seen it yet."He smiled at her saying, "No time, baby. I will see it later. "He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.

She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gestures or smiles. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔);her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed(把……砰地关上)the door and threw herself on her bed.

"Why is everybody so busy?" She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.

The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching the table cloth with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind. Softly, she asked, "Honey, did I do anything wrong?"
